Luna is an avid bird hunter, and has been since she could see birds. She points at birds and also retrieves them. She's been known to grab a bird mid-air, run around the house a few times and then deliver a completely undamaged bird ( and still very much alive) to hand. Actually, she's done this a few times.

The picture above is of Luna retrieving deer sheds. She is also an avid shed hunter / retriever.

Cedar Pond's Gudrid had her little lamb 3/5/2017. I was surprised she had only one lamb, last year she had twins. She was certainly big enough that even the shearer predicted she'd twin.

Gudrid and her ewe lamb are both doing well. The weather has given us quite a challenge though, because we've had snow and frozen ground since the weekend after last Thanksgiving. We have to keep moving big boards and panels around under the barn eaves to provide little temporary pens for the new mothers. We'd hoped to have fences and stalls done by now, but my sheep are such good and smart moms they've figured things out and in spite of the lamb jugs held together with baling twine and bungee cords , all my lambs and their moms are healthy and thriving.

Tovah lambed February 4, 2017. The sire of her lambs is Puddleduck Jonas. She had a healthy ram lamb and ewe lamb. Both lambs are doing well and so much fun to watch. Thus far I've had no new lambs but have 15 more ewes due to lamb. Just hoping they don't all decide to lamb at the same time.KathyB.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13076933273610590290noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7047231208175508623.post-17509712042588595672016-12-10T18:06:00.001-08:002016-12-10T18:06:09.908-08:00Wool Coats

We moved last June and are living in a climate with more extreme weather than Cedar Pond. My Jacob Sheep are unfazed by the cold , probably because they're wearing their wool coats. I need a wool coat like theirs.KathyB.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13076933273610590290noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7047231208175508623.post-48396268089994795602016-10-25T16:03:00.001-07:002016-10-25T16:46:21.623-07:00Too Many Rams !

This past breeding season my ewes produced some fantastic lambs , and my ram lambs are gorgeous! Usually I castrate the ram lambs so we don't have to deal with too many rams because anyone who keeps sheep knows dealing with just one ram is plenty. These lambs are too nice looking to wether ( castrate) so in spite of already having 2 adult rams we decided to keep them intact and chose one ram lamb for ourselves. We named this trio too. The front and center ram is Gustav, the ram to his back right is Magnus, and the ram we're keeping is back left, Tolkein.
The rams' J.S.B.A. ( Jacob Sheep Breeder's Assoc.) registration is pending. Both rams were born this past spring and ready to begin breeding. And boy are they ready ! I had some very nice lambs born here on Cedar Pond this spring. This ( above ) is Cedar Pond's Tasha and her ewe lamb. Tasha is a lilac Jacob sheep, her ewe ( girl ) lamb is black and white. The lamb's sire is Puddleduck Jonas.
Here is Bide-a-wee Buttercup with her ewe lamb. Buttercup had twins, a ram lamb and a ewe lamb, I sold the ram lamb ( he had 5 horns ! ) and am keeping the ewe lamb. The lamb's sire is Cedar Pond's Goth. This ewe lamb has 4 horns.

Here is Cedar Pond's Sassafras with her ewe lamb. Sassafras is 12 years old and still having lovely , healthy lambs. The sire of this lamb is Cedar Pond's Goth. The lamb has 4 horns.Sassafras is also 12 years old and there is a good chance she'll no longer be able to have lambs so I am keeping this little girl lamb.

This is Cedar Pond's Tovah and her ewe lamb, The lamb has 4 horns and her sire is Puddleduck Jonas. Jonas is my new ram and I am excited to see how his lambs grow and develop. Their fleeces are looking promising !
Here ( above ) is Cedar Pond's Inga. Inga is Buttercup and Goth's daughter. Her ewe lamb has 4 horns and was sired by Puddleduck Jonas. She has many of the qualities I covet in a Jacob Sheep so I am definitely keeping her !
Lastly, here is Blitzen. He is almost 3 years old and not a lamb, but he is a wether ( castrated sheep) and acts like a lamb ! He also likes to put on airs and play 'king of the hill'. Just like the other lambs.KathyB.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13076933273610590290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7047231208175508623.post-26470429063300979342016-04-23T01:42:00.000-07:002016-04-23T01:43:12.866-07:00Cedar Pond Ram Lambs ~ 2016

This ram lamb is a twin and son of Cedar Pond's Gudrid * and Puddleduck Jonas*. His 4 horns seem to coming along very nicely. His mother is the daughter of Bide-a-wee Buttercup* and Cedar Pond's Goth *.
This ram lamb is also sired by Puddleduck Jonas . His mother is Cedar Pond's Mahlion ( Mally ). He is the last born lamb and a large ram lamb. He has 2 very strong horns. It has been awhile since I had a 2 horn ram lamb born here. His mother has 6 horns that fused together as they grew larger , making it appear she has 2 very wide horns.
This blue-eyed ram lamb is a twin. His sire is also Puddleduck Jonas, his mother is Cedar Pond's Tilda *. His horns appear to be growing well too. I love the blue eyes he and his twin sister have.
This ram lamb is a twin ( left ) and the son of Bide-a-wee Buttercup & Puddleduck Jonas. He seems to have 5 horns and I am watching the growth of his horns. It looks like his horns will be fusing as they grow making it appear he has 2 very large horns. There is also a chance his horns will grow to have that dreaded 'lobster claw" look. We'll see. His sire is Cedar Pond's Goth *.
Unfortunately for Thistle he is now simply an amazing skull I have saved to take with me when I put on demonstrations and presentations about Jacob Sheep. I had high hopes for Thistle as a future breeding ram and I kept him and his half-brother Goth together so they could keep each other company as they grew . I was going to see which ram I preferred and sell the other. I was leaning towards keeping Thistle and selling Goth. That decision was taken away from me when Goth killed Thistle during play.

Rams do pretty much everything with ramming involved. To nurse from their mamas they ram her udder to bring down milk for them to suckle. To play they ram each other , the trees, the fences , everything. So one very hot week in the summer when both rams were about 16 months old Thistle got his horns caught in a feeder and Goth rammed Thistle as he was trapped exposing him broadside ~ a perfect target for his brother. Goth punctured Thistle's lung and Thistle died.
I have a new ram ! My husband & I made a day of it and drove to Oregon awhile ago to buy a new ram from Ingrid Painter of Puddleduck Farm. I cannot adequately express what a delightful time we had with Ingrid and her family as we shared a lunch provided by them and talked sheep ! Can I just say it is rare for me to be able to unashamedly talk sheep with people for a bit and I get so excited and inspired when I do. ( I suspect my husband does too but he's more quiet about it ! ) This is Puddleduck Jonas and his sire is a Huntsberger ram, all the more thrilling for me. I am looking forward to next spring's lambs. Jonas has settled in here quite easily and is a fairly mellow ram .YAY !!!!
This is my 2 year old ewe Teekah. Teekah is a trade for a ram we raised. ( Cedar Pond's Barbarian ) and is his daughter. I am going to sell Teekah because I have too many sheep and with the exception of our 10 year old Buttercup I don't keep 2 horned Jacob sheep in preference for the 4 horned. If I desired more 2 horned sheep she would be a keeper !
.... who is 14 or 15 years old. She has no more teeth, has not lambed for 2 years , and a month ago I thought she was going to lay down and die. She rallied though and is now going strong. Her fleece is terrible and the only reason I keep her is for sentimental ones. My first sheep are now old, a few have passed away and I am still excited about keeping Jacob sheep. God is so good to me, silly sheep that I am, and He is a good Shepherd. If only I could emulate him a fraction in His good care, but I try !KathyB.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13076933273610590290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7047231208175508623.post-58975995871867888212015-05-12T20:20:00.002-07:002015-05-13T00:22:01.787-07:00Cedar Pond Jacob Sheep for Sale ~

It's that time of the year when the lambs are all growing quickly and I have to decide which sheep to sell . As much as I'd love to keep all my sheep ( especially the new lambs ! ) it gets pretty expensive to feed so many and space is limited. The sheep above is Cedar Pond's Brigida * and she is for sale with her lilac ewe lamb ( girl lamb ). Brigida is registered and her lamb comes with all the paperwork to register her. Brigida is the daughter of Cedar Pond's Goth * & Bide-a-wee Buttercup *.

Brigida has 4 horns that grew out and fused evenly , 2 on each side of her head, making it appear she as two very nice wide horns. Her lamb also has 4 horns , now about an inch to two inches each.

I am selling Brigida and her lamb together for $225.00 for both of them. ( price is for both together)

Cedar Pond's Toril* is also for sale. She turned 1 year old this spring . She has 4 horns. She is the daughter of Shadow Mountain Landon & Cedar Pond's Tovah *.

Shadow Mountain Landon is also for sale. He is a registered 4 horn Lilac Jacob Sheep. He is 3 years old . He is related to most of my sheep now and I prefer not to use him for breeding with my flock, but he'll make a great ram for someone needing new bloodlines and wanting to add Lilac coloring to their flock. Landon ( I call him Tonkin ) is the son of Mud Ranch's Packard & Rocky Acres Rosemary. Both of his parents are lilac and 4 horned. He is a triplet. I am asking $225.00 for him. He has recently been sheared and vaccinated.KathyB.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13076933273610590290noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7047231208175508623.post-54851126467327319302015-02-26T22:03:00.002-08:002015-02-27T23:51:53.350-08:00More New Lambs

Cedar Pond's Gudrid also had her first lamb today, a healthy lilac ewe lamb. Today was a good day. God is so good to me, praise him !
Both lambs were sired by Shadow Mountain's Landon Tonkin.

First born lamb of 2015 ( February 12, 2015 ). He is a fine ram lamb from Bide-A-Wee Buttercup & Cedar Pond's Goth. I am hoping his horns turn out well balanced because Buttercup is getting older and I'd love to keep a ram lamb from her and the lamb's father, Goth.

The same morning Cedar Pond's Sassafras gave birth to a ewe lamb. The last 2 years she gave birth to twins, but Sassafras is getting older and her ewe lamb is a bit tinier than I expected given the girth Sassafras was sporting before she lambed. In spite of how tiny this lamb is, she is very healthy. This lamb is also sired by Goth. Goth is getting old too, and I am hoping there is a lamb sired by him worthy of keeping for my future generations of Jacob Sheep.

Sassafras was a very diligent mom, licking & licking her lamb to clean off the afterbirth. This also bonds the mama and her lamb. This little lamb was nursing her mama very quickly , a good thing for lambs, and all newborns. The first milk any mama produces gives newborns colostrum that provides not only the newborn her necessary nutrition, but the anti-bodies the little lamb needs for a good start in life. ( ALL newborns of all mammal species need this ! ) Ideally this happens within the first hour for optimum benefit. If I discover a mama has not been able to suckle her lamb within the first 2 hours I will milk the mama and feed the lamb the needed colostrum , giving the lamb a boost and increasing the chances the lamb will thrive.

Sassafras was not happy with me so close to her and her new lamb. She put herself in between me and the lamb , blocking any contact and any more pictures. I love knowing my mama sheep are good and protective mamas. That is the way God made them. And really, would YOU want to challenge a very protective mama with horns ?KathyB.http://www.blogger.com/profile/13076933273610590290noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7047231208175508623.post-51513368372861753792015-02-17T01:26:00.000-08:002015-02-17T01:26:05.618-08:00Peek-a-Boo

Peek-a-boo, I see you Buttercup. Buttercup is due to have her lambs any day now. She spends a lot of time propping her head up on railings while she soaks up the sunshine.

Blitzen is a wether ( castrated ram lamb ) . His side horns are growing too near his face and need to be kept trimmed to prevent them from growing into his face. Castrating a ram prevents not only the obvious, but also dramatically slows down his horn growth, making it manageable to keep the horns trimmed. We decided to keep and halter train him because he has a really sweet and friendly personality. He likes being around people, and having a few soda crackers to offer him only encourages him all the more.
This is Tasha, she is a lilac Jacob Sheep. She has funny horns, kind of like bug antennae !

Naomi is my very old sheep. I stopped breeding her 2 years ago when she began needing assistance for her lambings, and raising her own lambs took so much out of her I could watch her condition deteriorate even with increased food rations. My ram , Tonkin, is pretty interested in her, you can see him behind her on the other side of the fence.
Sassafras is a spunky sheep with a primitive wool coat. She grows a mane , a trait of the more primitive Jacob Sheep. She is a very good mama .
Teekah is the lamb I chose in a trade for a ram I wish I could have kept , Barbarian. Barbarian is thriving at his new home and Teekah is a good trade I think. Love the spot near her right horn and her little spotted mouth making her appear to smile.

As the weather gets colder my sheep are more frisky. On cool sunny days they run around and leap over logs and each other. Soon I will have them sheared and in late February through April I look forward to new lambs!
